Mung bean sprouts, shown on my sisters back deck.

When it’s too busy, too cold, too dry, or too hot to garden you can still grow your own food with sprouts. Sprouting seeds, grains or beans, is a wonderful way to put more energy and life into your meals, and for those of us who like the (almost) instant results sprouts are perfect! In just a day and a half we had a jar of Mung bean sprouts, ready to eat. For mung beans I soak them overnight, and then drain and rinse 2-3 times a day until their little sprout tails are about a 1/2 inch long. You can sprout grains, beans, seeds and then eat them raw. Sprouting can be great for travelers, or the non-committal types. Goes to show you don’t need soil to have a garden!
